James Thorpe - Musical Director

Born in Northamptonshire, James Thorpe began his musical career as a boy chorister at Lichfield Cathedral. After spending five years as a music scholar at Bedford School, he won a place at the Royal College of Music in London, studying the clarinet with leading British performer Janet Hilton. During his four-year degree course, he performed as a soloist and member of orchestras and choirs as well as participating in masterclasses and workshops with a variety of internationally-renowned musicians including David Campbell (clarinet) and Sir David Willcocks.

While completing his degree, James took an active interest in teaching and, upon graduation, accepted the first of his teaching posts: Director of Music at Cameron House School in Chelsea. Following a successful number of years leading music at this school, he undertook his PGCE in Primary Teaching before moving up to the Midlands, teaching at two schools in and around Stafford.

James is currently Director of Music at The Old Hall School in Wellington, a position he combines with directing Wrekin and Telford Singers and singing and playing with a variety of other local musical groups. He also teaches private lessons in clarinet, singing and piano.
